Intelligent Data Fabric Meets Century-Scale Storage

Long-term data preservation was once treated as a specialised requirement, limited to archives and regulated domains. That model no longer reflects reality. Today, most organisations retain large volumes of data for decades, often by default rather than by design, making digital preservation a mainstream infrastructure concern rather than a niche vertical.

Arcitecta’s Mediaflux® data fabric unifies and virtualises data across all storage systems, from high-performance on-premise hardware to public clouds and deep archives. By abstracting the complexity of where data lives, Mediaflux provides a single point of access to all metadata and files and intelligently manages data throughout its lifecycle.

Now, through an emerging partnership with Cerabyte, Arcitecta is exploring the next frontier in sustainable data storage: ceramic-on-glass technology that promises to preserve data for centuries while consuming no energy to retain the data.

A New Archival Tier for the Data Lifecycle

Organisations generate vast volumes of data, which must be accessible for years, decades or longer - yet more than 70% will be rarely, if ever, accessed. Traditionally, data storage requires regular technology refreshes and migrations, increasing costs and environmental impact.

Cerabyte’s Ceramic Data Storage changes that paradigm.

This offers a green, permanent archive that complements Mediaflux’s intelligent tiering and metadata-driven data management. Together, they form a foundation for a truly sustainable, long-term data preservation & management strategy.

The Integration Vision

Mediaflux integrates diverse storage types, and Cerabyte is simply another storage type within that virtualised ecosystem.

In this model:

01

Mediaflux automatically migrates cold or inactive data to Cerabyte based on metadata rules.

02

All metadata remains online and searchable, giving users instant visibility and retrieval control.

03

Archived data on Cerabyte cartridges remains physically safe, permanently stored consuming no energy to retain data.

The result is a seamless bridge between active data management and ultra-durable, zero-energy archival storage.

Innovation in Motion

Cerabyte’s prototype systems, already operational and built from commercial off-the-shelf components, demonstrate MB/s-scale throughput and gigabyte-class media today, with a roadmap toward petabyte-scale capacity per rack and gigabyte-per-second access speeds by 2030.

Arcitecta and Cerabyte are exploring how these technologies can integrate through Mediaflux’s policy-based tiering engine, enabling organisations to define long-term (100+ year) retention policies and lifecycle rules. This will allow data to move intelligently through its active, nearline, and archival phases, with metadata always available through Mediaflux’s global namespace, and ultimately preserved permanently on Cerabyte’s ultra-durable, zero-energy ceramic storage.

Even in this proof-of-concept phase, the possibilities are game-changing, combining Mediaflux’s data intelligence with Cerabyte’s material science to deliver durable, responsible data stewardship.

Better for Everyone

For organisations, this collaboration means a smarter, more sustainable way to manage data over its entire lifecycle.

Data can be preserved for decades or even centuries, without maintenance, migrations, or energy costs. Storage performance and accessibility remain seamless, while total ownership costs drop by as much as 75%. Data stays resilient, searchable, and secure across every tier of infrastructure.

For the planet, the benefits are equally significant. With up to 99% energy savings and the elimination of e-waste, this approach represents a new, circular model for data stewardship.

Most importantly, it ensures that the knowledge, creativity, and discoveries of today remain accessible to future generations, safeguarding our collective digital heritage in a way that is both responsible and enduring.

Looking Ahead

The Arcitecta + Cerabyte partnership embodies our collective mission to simplify data management while reducing complexity, cost, and carbon footprint. Cerabyte’s technology is in an early access phase, but it represents a near-term breakthrough that aligns with global goals for sustainability, digital preservation, and data resilience.

Arcitecta encourages customers and partners to watch this space. Join us in shaping a future where data is intelligently managed and preserved for generations to come.
